Many waterfront campsites. Well maintained. Great for hiking, kayaking, or just a night in the woods.
One of my absolutely favorite campgrounds it is rustic, but they have access to running water, not hand pumps, and the bathrooms are flush toilets and running water but no showers. There is no electricity at the sites, but they are large and pretty private with nice large fire rings and a post with hooks on it for a lantern or whatever. The outside ring of campsite is pretty much all on the water with access to the beach.
Decent campground, most sites reasonably private. Watch out if using recreation.gov, as with some campgrounds the sites are not posted correctly on their map. I reserved site 25 and found out after I got there it was in the middle of the loop, not on the lake side as recreation.gov showed. I was very happy the camp host helped me change sites after one night. The campground itself is great - two sections of sites, and a decent walk between them which made a great dog walk. There are some great first come-first served sites if you don't reserve online. I was there midweek August and there were always a couple of sites available. The "north loop" has the edge sites either at the water, or behind some brush that is at the water. The second site we were at had a boardwalk through the brush down to the water. The lake itself had a weedy shore right there. The "west loop" as some sites on the south edge of the lake, with great views out into the lake. But the sites across the campground road there have a decent forest behind them, very woodsy feeling. Still some room between sites. I would probably stay in one of these sites if I go back. Some maintenance is needed - one of the docks was broken and unusable, taped off with caution tape. But the campground itself is well kept up, and sits along the multi-state North Country Trail. It's what you would expect for an Upper Peninsula campground. There were amazingly very few bugs this year.
Such a beautiful lake and campground. My family has been enjoying it for several years. As others have mentioned, the campground/bathrooms are clean, hosts are great, and it's quiet. Sites along the east side of the peninsula get beach access/lots of room for kids to run around. A couple of things have happened over the years that have degraded our camping experience from amazing to still really good but with serious disappointments: 1) The fishing pier got disconnected from land a few years ago and has been in disrepair. No one is able to use it, though the platform part is great for fishing. 2) The National Forest website says that canoe, kayak, and stand up paddleboards are available for rent from the concessionaire, but that's not true. While I would love for this service to be brought back, it was super sad to have counted on it because of the website description, show up with my kids who were looking forward to this, and find nothing there anymore. We don't own watercraft, and it was such a disappointment! Between this and the fishing pier off limits, it was a real damper on our recent trip. I know this year is a rebuilding year with a new concessionaire, and the campground host Brian was super helpful. My recommendation would be to update the website so that it's honest and work towards some basic amenities onsite, perhaps in this order of priority: 1) firewood, 2) ice, 3) canoe & kayak rental, 4) putt-putt golf, 5) ice cream or food (all of these were present before the campground closed down in 2023/2024). Like I said, such a great campground. I hope to continue building memories with our family for years to come.
Beautiful National Forest campground with paved roads and flush toilets. No electric or water hookup but there are plenty of potable water stations in the campground. Nice fishing lake, very shallow swimming area for kids. All in all, a relaxing place to vacation and unwind.
