Enjoyed staying there. Showers were in good condition. Easy access. Friendly's service at the store. Rafts and other floating devices in good shape. On time pick up by bus driver from river. Great time all around.

We camped this last weekend, enjoyed the park and river access. Its within 30 mins of Taum Sauk Mountain, Elephant Rocks, and Johnston shut in state parks. There are decent showers and bathrooms at the main part of the campground. The rv spots looks very nice, and the east side of the river looked nice too. We met the camp host, he was a very nice guy. We camped on the north side of highway in primitive spots. We did however encounter a bear the first night, we heard some loud huffing, right outside our spot, I shined my flashlight towards the noise, thankfully the light was enough to scare it off and it ran off up the hill towards the north. Just something to think about, although it's rare to encounter a bear, it can happen.

Operated by USACE. Overall a nice campground with pretty good facilities. The campgrounds are spread out over three areas. On the south side of the highway, west of the river are improved camp sites with paved pull ins designed for RVs. They are out in the open and I wouldn’t recommend them for anything but RVs. Staying on the west side of the river, but north of the highway there are a few unimproved sites. On the east side of the river there are numerous camp sites both improved and unimproved. There are 3 loops. Loop B is closest to the river and unimproved. Loop C is on a hill side and quite honestly appears to be tough for tent camping. They are nice, but the only level ground is the pull in which is paved. The two sites on the south side of highway K have nice playgrounds; a picnic shelter; and flush toilets with showers. Access is readily available to the Black River. The Black River is a clear, cool spring fed river that’s popular with canoers and rafters. We were there during the week on a hot day and the crowd wasn’t too bad. I’m sure it can get crowded on a hot summer weekend day. Camp sites are reserveable on line.

I was pleasantly surprised with this campground. It was my first time here, and a last minute booking so I didn’t have a choice of sites since they were mostly reserved already. I was in site A10, this loop had plenty of shade. The only reason I did not give a full 5 stars is because the sites are a bit close together. But there were a few sites that looked much better. The showers could be a bit cleaner as well, they need to spray some bleach in there. And because it was so busy the hot water ran out every night so it was air temperature basically. But it was so hot out it wasn’t bad. Seems like a very family oriented campground, with a playground in the middle. Typically not my type of place with kids running around but it wasn’t bad, everyone was nice. The water was great as well! Warmer than I expected, compared to the current and jacks fork rivers nearby.

Nice park in the mountains but no sewer hook-ups. Nowhere to ride bikes. No trails. Beautiful creek/river headwaters 1/4 mile from campground.
