Beautiful place with flush toilets and regularly replaced toilet paper. We saw police, fire, and waste-collection trucks patrolling the area, which felt reassuring. Note for hay fever sufferers visiting in December: the campsite is surrounded by dry grass and can be very windy, so it may be uncomfortable even with medication.
A large free camp area next to Lake Colac. As others have stated, it does get very windy here, so plan where you have you have your tent or van door. 24 hours maximum, but easy to register on the shire website to extend for a few days (max 28). Rubbish bins, toilets and town water available. We stayed here as a base to explore part of the Great Ocean Road and Otway NP. About 10kms to Colac for visitor centre and shops. Dump point is at the showground caravan park (fees may apply)
Always a good site close to town. Be cautious with getting bogged the closer you come to the shore/sand, or wet soil. Walk before parking. Bins are now at entrance, and maybe at other joint areas. Renowned for being a windy locale. Great sunrises and sets. Lights of Colac shimmer over the lake at night.
Pros: Free, pretty clean, beautiful lake, open spaces for all sorts of camping styles, portable water, toilets, seems to be a lot of people catching fish from the shore. Cons: People living here (their camp spots look grubby),people not respecting others with music/ sub woofers, bit of rubbish around, few roughies yelling, people washing their plates etc in lake, can be windy. If you can get here mid week I think it would be mint, standard weekend brings in the unwanted. The environment is perfect, people just don’t respect others & what’s given to us.
Meredith Park Camping Grounds is a fantastic spot for anyone who loves camping and nature. Located about 1.5 hours from Melbourne, this beautiful campsite is by a serene river, offering spacious grounds with breathtaking views. We visited as two families, including a 4-year-old, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The river was a big hit with the kids, who had endless fun playing in the sand, while the men relaxed and enjoyed fishing. The grounds are well-maintained, and there are plenty of clean public toilets, which added to the comfort of our stay. This cozy yet open space is perfect for families, groups, or solo campers looking for a peaceful retreat close to the city. Highly recommended for a memorable camping getaway!
