We have been here a few times on our way to Big Bend and back. This park is very large and has some good bike trails. It also has a lot of stickers and little water. We have seen the lake mostly dry then another time it had water. It is definitely quite but there are a lot of red lights blinking at night. We will continue to use this as a good stop over when traveling.
We camped here for two nights and could have easily stayed two more! We biked all around the park, I hiked the Roadrunner trail, and we stopped Bison. Later we visited with the ranger during feeding and then we got the see the whole herd of Bison and maybe of the Longhorn, a wonderful experience.
Totally understand the phrase “big open skies” much more after a drive through this majestic area of Texas. Peaceful, calm, a serene vibe. Really cool duo inside the welcome gate that gave us maps and we were warned that they just fed the bison steer and we did see them. (video attached) Totally happy animals in an environment in which they are respected and protected. Wonderful wonderful town is San Angelo.
Had a wonderful time camping here over the weekend, breathtaking sunsets and stunning sunrises. Be sure to bring some form of bug spray with you though. The bathrooms close to our campsite had a wasp problem, as did the pavilion at our actual site. Even still, a good time was had for myself and the party I was with.
Outstanding Experience at San Angelo State Park We had an outstanding stay at San Angelo State Park! The park is beautifully maintained, peaceful, and full of scenic views. The campsites are spacious, level, and easy to access, with clean facilities and well-kept grounds. The staff were friendly, helpful, and made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. We loved exploring the trails and relaxing in the quiet, natural surroundings. It’s a perfect place to unwind, enjoy the outdoors, and take in the beauty of West Texas — we’ll definitely be back!
