Enjoyable snorkeling off of a dock with an easy to navigate ladder entrance. We saw a variety of fish. Locals and tourists alike enjoyed the park on the day we were there.

Māhukona Beach Park is a hidden gem! It's super convenient to enter the water right off the parking lot, making it perfect for a spontaneous swim or snorkeling adventure. The views of Maui across the channel are absolutely stunning, especially at sunset. The historic vibe of the old harbor adds a unique charm, and the crystal-clear water is great for spotting whales. It's a peaceful spot to relax, explore, and appreciate the natural beauty of Hawaii. Highly recommend for a laid-back beach day!

Secluded rocky area great for snorkeling! History of sugar plantation, train station and previous settlements is interesting and sad, all in the same.

Cool spot for snorkeling and free dive. 2 different areas to park, water seems clear with a ladder entry on one side. Not very busy on a Friday afternoon.

Ok, my wife, for some reason, thinks this place is creepy. Too open to the ocean. Thinks sharks might go there. I’ve never seen one here. I personally really like this place. Know before you go: 1.) There is NO beach here. It’s an old cement pier with a ladder that you use to lower yourself into the water. It’s nice though. Otherwise the shore is lava rock with no place to enter the water. 2.) My wife is correct in one regard though… this is very open to the ocean. Deeper water than most snorkeling places. Can be exposed to large swells. Getting in and out on the ladder in a swell can be very challenging. 3.) If you have mobility issues, then getting in the water could be very hard. 4.) Snorkeling can be very good here. But if the wind or swells are up then the water can be a little murky. 5.) Popular with spear fishers. 6.) It’s over an hour north of Kona. 7.) Definitely NOT for little kids. I’d say 10 or even 12 would be the youngest that should swim here unless you have been on a swim team or are accustomed to ocean swimming. 8.) You should probably be a strong swimmer to go here. The ladder itself is straight up and down and can be tough. Once you’re in, you’re in ocean water with all the swells. It’s a cool place and unlike anywhere else on the island. See what you think… creepy or cool?
