We’ve stayed in OSSP twice before, but being able to camp here for two weeks really opened our eyes to all it has to offer. There are playgrounds both inside and outside of the campground. We loved riding our bikes on a wide variety of trails, with surfaces ranging from firm grassy soil to sugar sand - and there is direct access to the paved Legacy Trail, which runs from Venice to downtown Sarasota. Besides two bald eagles’ nests, there are several species of wading birds to be seen at the lakes, along with the elusive Florida Scrub Jay. Many gopher tortoises have their burrows in the park.
Went here for a short walk around their pond. I wish I had more time to explore this park more. Driving to the pond we passed multiple beautiful campsites. They had bathrooms available at the pond. It was perfect for a stroll with the family. I highly recommend checking this place out. I will definitely be returning to this place if I am ever in the area again.
As a Florida State Park, Oscar Scherer shares the beauty of Florida, provide an outstanding visitor experience, and preserves amazing places. There's a shaded path by the creek, with engaging interpretive signs and benches and drinking water; a kayak launch with an easy to use borrowing system, playgrounds; other paths have less shade but offer the chance to see the charismatic scrub jay; there are walking paths and bike paths; the nature center has exhibits for children and adults. This is a gem in the middle of Sarasota County, worthwhile for hiking, bird watching, & more
Vegetation between sights makes it very private and quiet. Volunteers and park personnel are very helpful and friendly. Bathhouses are pretty tired but functional. Nice that you can pick up the Legacy Bike Trail right at the campground. Also excellent kayak launch.
This smaller park is a hidden gem, offering breathtaking beauty. Our visit was thoroughly enjoyable and highlighted by a sighting of the endangered Florida scrub-jay. I encourage you to stop by and experience it for yourself, you won't be disappointed.
