ACOE Canal Campground Grand Rivers, KY All I can say is this & the Land Between The Lakes Nat'l Rec Area Hillman Ferry campground (which is only about a few miles down the road) are the metropolis' of campgrounds. These are HUGE campgrounds with a LOT of sites. But they are also wildly popular to locals & travelers alike, so don't expect there will be space available. This is also one of those ACOE owned/maintained camps, so you can book online through recreation.gov, but also at the time of year we went (mid Sept) they also had attendants at the front gate who can take your payment & get you checked in. Regardless, this is a beautiful camp with very well maintained COE facilities right along the canal. The entire park is in a beautiful old growth hardwood & pine mixed forest with rolling hills, so there's plenty of shady spots, but we just so happened to book one of the last sites available on a Saturday that was in their only parking lot campground (literally), so no shade for us. Also beware that if you have a camper or RV it's prudent to go on recreation.gov & put in your trailer or RV size, as some sites pads in this park are literally a hump or hill that some trailers or RVs could fit in or level out properly on. Other than that, tge other facilities were great. Older but clean restrooms with H/C water. It even has coin-op washers & dryers by 2 bathhouses! Lastly, someone commented how this campground & entire area is one of those golf cart cities. It sure is. I'll never understand the whole gold-cart culture - but maybe that's because I've had a (now) classic Jeep Wrangler with a removable top since 1988 & got those yahoo's out of driving around in the open air when I was young. Lol.
Really enjoy this Core of Engineers campground. Need to make reservations through Recreation.gov. We stay at this campground at least once a year. Through the years we have stayed in different loops. Decided we like the view loop because we don't have to unhook our boat that we tow. The overflow parking for boats is not easy to get to, their boat launch is very steep. The sites are paved but you need levelers. Electric & water hook-ups.
A perfect place to chill. all campers are friendly. I've never had a problem there in all the years I've camped there. I love the nature there most of all. woodpeckers, deer, frogs, squirrels, I just love it here.
Gorgeous RV and Tent campsite, maintained by the US Army Corp of Engineers. Water and Power available, even at primitive sites. Hot showers, US Federal Park Discounts for Seniors. Beaches, lake, amphitheater. Some noise issues from uncontrolled dogs barking and people genning around in noisy vehicles, but otherwise quiet location.
Canal campground is at the northern end of the Land Between the Lakes. It's easy to get to, and the main roads are nice blacktop. However, most of the loop roads are narrow, rough, and twisty. There is a good choice of sites from primitive to full hookup. Some of the loop roads can be difficult for big rigs. Our stay was overall, very enjoyable.
